The Investment Question

Art, science or something else?

Is successful investment an art or a science? Is it all about the numbers or is it more about intuition? Is it luck or profound wisdom and judgement?

Nature is infinitely beautiful and varied in all its forms, but the Fibonacci sequence and ‘the golden ratio’ can be found in the smallest plant and the largest galaxy. From apparent chaos and randomness, we find patterns and order, and through this we find understanding, and from understanding we can apply learning. For many centuries we have developed our understanding of risk and increasingly applied the principles of risk management to the challenge of growing our wealth. To a degree we can now predict future outcomes with an increasing level of confidence, but we must never believe we are Gods. There lies the folly of man: to believe we can eliminate all risk, and the unpredictable outcome that, once it has happened, seems so obvious.

Diversification – that is the obvious answer to managing my investment risk. “Just invest in those index trackers and you will be good” is often heard as the solution. “If it is good enough for William Buffett it is good enough for me” often heard as the justification. However, the situation is not quite that simple. Mr Buffett doesn’t just invest in index trackers, far from it.

In the last 25 years technology has transformed the wealth management arena. Today we can manage our investments from a smartphone whilst ordering pizza. So, in an age of information and accessibility why do you need the services of independent financial advisors; people like us?

Also, wealth management involves more than just growing the pot. There is an old saying that making money is easy, keeping it is much harder! For many making money is not that easy either but as a rule of thumb an investment in stocks and shares will double over a 10-year period if managed sensibly. Therefore, consideration needs to be given to tax planning, inheritance planning, diversification, financial management and several other factors. The larger the pot the greater the complexity. It isn’t that you can’t manage this yourself, of course you can. But it does take time and effort. Having an independent financial advisor as part of your team helps lighten the load and often results in a better solution.

We believe that wealth management is not all about understanding the markets but understanding all about you. Your needs today are unique, and your needs in 10 or 20 years from now will be unique. The journey between now and when your wealth passes to the next generation will be unique.
